Email Hack Causes Headache For Glen Rock Resident: Blotter

03-08-2021
4:31 p.m. – A Hawthorne resident reported she purchased a bottle of vodka for $12 and departed the store. A short time later she returned claiming $120 was missing from her purse. The store clerk reported that the transaction was recorded with the proper payment. A review of store video by P.O. Annamarie Mattina confirmed the clerk’s account. No further action was taken.

8:05 a.m. – A Highwood Avenue resident reported that their unlocked vehicle was entered overnight while parked in their garage, which had been left open. The resident provided video footage of the incident from their “Ring” floodlight camera recorded at 2:18 AM. Nothing was reported missing from the vehicle. The video footage was forwarded to detectives for review; however, the actor was wearing a facemask.

7:52 p.m. – A Glen Rock resident reported that a $25,000 invoice to one of his clients was intercepted online and revised by unknown persons from Nigeria. The revised invoice routed payment to a bank in the United Kingdom. Since the resident’s client was the actual victim, the complainant was advised that his client needs to report the matter through the police department in the jurisdiction where they reside. Glen Rock Detectives have reviewed the matter but cannot act until a report is filed through the appropriate jurisdiction.

7:31 a.m. – A Cornwall Road resident, near Prospect Street, reported that her home had been burglarized the day prior, perhaps sometime between 12 noon and 2 PM. The complainant was not immediately aware anyone had entered the home at that time. Investigation found that entry was gained through a bedroom window. The actor(s) pried a screen from the window frame and opened the window which was concealed by large hedges. Missing from the home was an undetermined amount of jewelry. The resident is attempting to provide an inventory to detectives.
The scene was processed by the Crime Scene Unit of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department B.C.I. and detectives are investigating the existence of possible video surveillance footage from the area.

9:21 p.m. – A Glen Rock resident reported they had received an email from an elderly relative seeking help paying a $200 bill due to a problem with their credit card. After paying the bill on the relative’s behalf, the resident was contacted by their relative informing the complainant that their email had been hacked and not to send money to anyone. The resident is attempting to reverse the transaction.

10:53 p.m. – A resident on the 200 block of Glen Avenue reported that their 2015 Infinity Q50 was stolen from their driveway overnight. The complainant was unable to locate their key fob and feels it was most likely left in the unlocked vehicle when it was parked in the driveway around 11 PM the night before.
