This Firefighter's Invention Could Save Your Pet's Life
Customizable signs inform emergency personnel that pets live in a home where a fire or other emergency is taking place.
Ridgewood, NJ firefighter Brendan Corcoran has created a product informing first responders there are pets at the residence before they set foot in the home.
Corcoran created the Pet Alert Sign, a customizable sign that lets people know how many and what kind of pets live in the house. The signs light up via solar power and can stand on their own or be attached to a window.
“I was inspired to create the Pet Alert Sign after being involved in multiple pet rescues and seeing a need for a more effective alert system,” Corcoran said. “I knew that the earlier firefighters knew about pets in home the better chance of survival they would have, seconds really do count.”

Corcoran said that 40,000 pets die in fires annually and more than 500,000 are affected.
“Due to their smaller body size our pets are much more susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation,” Corcoran said. “Pets are also often left in the home alone and clearly cannot rescue themselves so first responders need to know about the pets in the home as soon as possible.”

The signs are not available commercially yet. Corcoran has completed a prototype and he is talking to several manufactures to try and get a deal in place.
Corcoran said he may start an online crowdfunding or pre-order campaign to help generate interest and get the product to market more quickly.
