Firefighters Save Glen Rock Family's Lives After Generator Leak

Breaking: A malfunctioning generator was leaking gas into the family's home.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — A borough family is lucky to be alive after a generator leaked gas into their home Wednesday morning.

Katie Machera said her family lost power during the storm and a generator immediately switched on, providing power for the rest of the night.

The family was awakened by their carbon monoxide detector beeping. Machera thought the beeping was due to a low battery, but called 911 "just to be safe," she said.

Glen Rock Police officers and firefighters were at Machera's house and determined that the generator was leaking gas into the house, Machera said.

"One of the firemen said if we ignored it and had gone back to bed, it would have been a different kind of call in the morning," Machera said. "Feeling so grateful that we are safe and alive this morning."
