Football Notches Must-Win Victory Over Garfield, Soccer Teams Score & More

Boys and girls varsity soccer also earn big county tournament wins

Coming off of a tough overtime loss in Rutherford last week, Glen Rock's Varsity Football team needed to bounce back at home on Friday afternoon against Garfield.

The Panthers did exactly that.

The team overcame a slow start to beat the Boilermakers 27-7, improving to 4-1 on the season.

While the offense was without starting quarterback Tim Miller and runningback Joe Leem due to injuries, the team was able to find the endzone twice on offense.

Junior quarterback Mike O'neill hit Freddie Pulzello and Matt Aportela on touchdown throws.

The defense though, was the story of the day.

The D racked up five turnovers, including interceptions by Jeff Kopyta, Frank Amoresano and Pat Sheahen.  Kopyta also scored on a fumble recovery in the first quarter to make it 14-0 early on.

The defense made sure that they preserved the lead that they held going into halftime, holding Garfield off of the scoreboard in the second half.

Up next is another tough game for Glen Rock as they take on Secaucus in what should be a hard fought battle.

Check out the videos for highlights and interviews with the team

Girls Soccer

The Girls Soccer team has continued their success from early on, as the team is playing great defense and scoring plenty of goals as well.

Their fast start allowed them to receive the number four seed in the ultra-competitive Bergen County Tournament.

On Sunday, the Lady Panthers notched a 1-0 victory over Bergen Tech to advance to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.  They will take on Ramsey.

Should all the top seeded teams advance into the semi-finals, Glen Rock would take on first seeded Northern Highlands.

The most amazing stat for the Lady Panthers: They've only surrendered one goal all season, on Tuesday in the teams 3-1 win over Hawthorne.

As the Lady Panthers continue to dominate, they are looking to not only make a deep county tournament run, but to lock up a high seed in the state tournament as well.

Boys Soccer

After a slow start to the season, the boys soccer team is beginning to hit their stride. The team got a huge county win against higher-seeded River Dell.

They then moved on to play seventh-seeded Cliffside Park and despite being a lower seed, the team used a first-half goal by Braden DeWan to blank Cliffside 1-0 and move on to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

This was a HUGE win for a team that seems to be getting better every game. Their next task won't be easy, as they will take on 2nd seeded Ramsey in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Since their 4-0 loss to Pascack Hills and 1-1 tie against Garfield, the team has elevated their play.

The result is a 5-0 record since then, with wins coming against Pompton Lakes, Elmwood Park, River Dell, Manchester and then Cliffside Park on Sunday.

The team will get another shot at both Pascack Hills and Garfield in the coming weeks as they look to improve on their record and earn a higher seed in the state tournament.

Girls Tennis

The North I Group II tournament has started out well for the Lady Panthers as they defeated Lodi 5-0 to move on to the next round of the tournament.

Alex Mircea (6-1 6-0), Sara Goldberg (6-0, 6-0) and Jenn Lee (6-1, 6-0) all won their singles matches.

Joanne Bae and Katie Dao (6-0, 6-0) and Julia Rosenwald Diana Editoiu (6-1, 6-0) won their doubles matches in what was a lopsided win for Glen Rock.

Advancing to the finals won't be easy, as 7th seeded Glen Rock will travel to take on #2 seeded Kittatinny on Tuesday.

Cross Country

Both the boys and girls teams continued their successful seasons on Wednesday, as both teams defeated Pompton Lakes.

The Panthers got strong performances from Tom Heinbockel (18:01) and Andrew Brennan (18:22) as the team continues to win not just on a few individual runners, but the ability for the majority of the team to put up solid times.

Katie Scandale paced the Lady Panthers with a 21:27 time and she was followed by strong times from Katie Vandervalk, Sarafina Milgrom and Lila Milgrom as well.

Volleyball

Though things started out tough for the Lady Panthers on the court, they have continued to improve and that improvement is being shown in their current record.

The team is above .500 now, after defeating Manchester 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

Their 6-5 record is in part to a big performance against Manchester. Amanda Lemieux led Glen Rock with 5 kills and 13 digs and Samantha Alba had 7 assists.

The team is back in action on Monday against Wallington.
