Glen Rock Mayor Joins National Wear Orange Campaign

'We as a country must do more to reduce gun violence,' Mayor Bruce Packer said.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Mayor Bruce Packer encourages residents to join the Wear Orange movement June 2 in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Packer issued a declaration Wednesday recognizing the day and urging residents to prevent the "tragic effects of gun violence."

A group of Chicago teeangers started the Wear Orange movement in 2013 when they asked their classmates to honor their friend Hadiya Pendleton by wearing orange — the color that hunters wear to protect themselves and that reflects the value of human life, according to the campaign. Pendleton, 15, was shot in the back while standing with friends inside Harsh Park in Chicago.

More than 200 mayors throughout the country joined the Wear Orange movement in 2016.
