Glen Rock Police Investigate Possible Craigslist Scam, Bounced Rent Checks: Blotter

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Borough police investigated at least one possible Craigslist scam this week. The scam was just some of the activity police logged at one of the 241 calls for service authorities handled this week.

July 10

8:58 p.m.: A Hackensack woman reported a possible Craigslist scam concerning the rental of a Glen Rock home. A preliminary investigation found that the house in question is vacant and the current address for the owner could not be determined. The matter has been referred to the Detective Bureau for review.

July 11

6:38 p.m.: A Doremus Avenue resident reported that unknown person(s) have placed a sign on his front lawn without his authorization on two occasions. The complainant alleged that these actions are related to his public views on a local issue. There were no known witnesses nor any evidence that could identify a specific suspect.

July 12

4:34 p.m. – Patrols were dispatched to a dispute in progress at an Ackerman Avenue auto body shop. Investigation determined that a disagreement over final wages due to a terminated employee turned into an argument, police said. The former employee alleged that the business owner had assaulted him, a claim which the owner denied, authorities said. Both were advised to seek recourse through the courts if they so desired. The terminated employee was escorted off the premises, police said.

July 13

6:13 p.m.: A Midwood Road resident reported finding an open package in her yard, which was addressed to a neighbor on an adjacent street. Most of the contents had been removed from the package. The neighbor could not be contacted. Investigation found the house in question to be vacant with no forwarding address.

July 14

7:06 p.m.: The manager of Bottle King Liquors on Prospect Street reported an individual attempting to purchase alcohol with a fraudulent identification. Officer T.J. Graziani subsequently arrested a 20-year-old Princeton man for possession of a forged Maryland driver’s license, police said. The man was processed at Police headquarters and released on his own recognizance pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court on July 25.

8:24 p.m.: A Gordon Place resident reported that he had purchased concert tickets in response to an advertisement on Craigslist. The complainant reported that he paid $350 for the tickets which were later determined to be fake. The Detective Bureau is reviewing the matter.

July 15

2:42 p.m.: A Ferndale Avenue property owner reported that three of his tenant’s rent checks had been returned by the bank due to insufficient funds, police said. The matter was documented and the landlord was advised of the procedures required for him to pursue the matter.
