The Glen Rock Police Department reminds motorists to use common sense while driving near snowplows as our DPW crews work to clear snow and ice from our roadways.

  • Give snowplows room to do their job. It’s best practice to not tailgate or try to pass a snowplow while it’s working.
  • As a general rule, stay at least 200 feet behind a snowplow.
  • These are large, heavy vehicles and the drivers are intent on their task at hand. Don’t be another distraction to the plow driver. They cannot stop in a short distance.
  • There may be spreaders on trucks to distribute salt or sand on the road. These can cause damage to cars if driving too close. Stay back to protect your car and you.
  • During plowing operations, visibility can be reduced by blowing snow and plow operators may need time to stop or move over to avoid stranded vehicles. Keeping a safe distance between your vehicle and the plow is very important in order to avoid accidents.
  • When you see an approaching snowplow, move as far away from the center line as you safely can since blowing snow may obscure the actual width of the snowplow’s blade.
  • When a bucket loader is being used by DPW crews to load snow in the back of a dump truck, NEVER drive or walk between the bucket loader and the dump truck. Stay as far away as possible.
  • Winter driving requires motorists to be careful and alert, but the most important tip for winter driving is: SLOW DOWN!
