IRS Call Scammer Claimed To Be A Ridgewood Cop, Police Say
Caller was able to give resident the department's phone number.

A Ridgewood resident received a call from someone claiming to be a Ridgewood Police Officer as part of an Internal Revenue Service scam, authorities said.
The resident received the call Wednesday from someone claiming to be from the IRS who told the resident they owed back taxes, police said.
The caller requested the resident deposit the money into a Wells Fargo bank account, and provided an account number, or risk being arrested by the police, authorities said.

The threatening caller also claimed to be from the Ridgewood Police Department and gave the resident the phone numbers of both the Ridgewood Police Department and the IRS, police said.
Ridgewood police said that these types of scams are becoming more popular and target the elderly.

Neither the IRS nor the Ridgewood Police Department would contact you by phone to request money. The IRS mails out all of its collection notices.
