Lady Maroons Move to BC Second Round
Maroons also outrun some of the state's best in cross-country
The Ridgewood girls soccer team ended a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over 25th-seeded Holy Angels at home in the first round of the Bergen County tournament on Monday.
The eighth-seeded Maroons take on ninth-seeded Mahwah on Sunday in Mahwah in the Round of 16 at a time still to be determined.
Ridgewood controlled the game throughout with a 2-0 lead at halftime. "We did a great job in our ball-control game," said Ridgewood head coach Jeff Yearing who won his 401st career game. "They (Holy Angels) played five back and were able to play our game in the middle."
The Lady Maroons received scoring from four different sources – Courtney Tarleton, Emily Entwistle, Maura Feeney and Anna Caliendo. Ridgewood raised its record to 4-3-1 before a big 7-0 loss to Northern Highlands on Tuesday. Neither the offense or defense had any answers for one of North Jersey's toughest teams.
Before the county tournament contest, Ridgewood faced two tough battles and came out on the losing side in both instances.
On Saturday the Lady Maroons dropped a 3-1 decision to Kearny and the hardest pill to swallow was losing to Paramus on the road on Sept. 27 in overtime, 3-2. Against the Lady Spartans, Tarleton put a shot in the back of the net to tie the game with less than three minutes in regulation and send the game into overtime. But Paramus striker Sarah Cortes would put a dagger in the back of the Maroons with her third goal of the game and a shot by Ridgewood goalie Olivia Shaw on the left side with less than three minutes left in the first overtime period.
Cross Country
The strong Maroons cross country squad came out on top against some of the best teams in the state at the Shore Coaches Cross Country Invitational.
The boys cross country team won Group B with 71 points far outdistancing Northport, N.Y. who had 138 points. The Ridgewood boys team was led by having its top six runners coming in the top 24 in the group led by junior Will Ades, who finished seventh with a time of 16:39. Another junior Nick Salamone was second highest Ridgewood runner with a ninth place finish at 16:44. A pair of seniors were next in Levi Jennings (16:56) and Travis Spicer (17:08) coming 12th and 20th respectively. Junior Storm Dublirer and senior Mark French finished just behind themselves at 23rd and 24th respectively with times of 17:14 and 17:15. The other Maroons runner, senior Ben Fishbein, ran 41st (17:34) out of the 187 runners that raced in the group.
On the girls side, the Lady Maroons were just as good, but Ridge was just a bit better. Ridgewood girls registered a score of 75 while Ridge rounded out a 61. The Lady Maroons brought home its top six races in the top 24 in Shore race.
The tandem of senior Caroline Davidson and sophomore Emily Fishbein raced home in eighth and ninth place respectively with times of 20:05 and 20:09. Senior Hanako Shigenobu finished in 15th place at 20:28 while three Ridgewood runners ran back-to-back-to-back in sophomore Laura Weisberger (20:51), freshman Catherine Pagano (20:54) and junior Lesley Jones (20:56) from 22nd to 24th. The other Ridgewood runner, senior Victoria Pan, had a time of 21:44, 40th out of a running group of 145.
Football
The Ridgewood squad will look to take some frustrations on Thursday at Clifton after being taken care of Don Bosco and Ramapo in back-to-back weeks.
On Saturday the Maroons were spoiled by the Green Raiders in a return to their home and dropped a 41-7 decision to rival Ramapo. Turnovers hurt Ridgewood as they coughed up the ball four times. The Maroons lone touchdown was a Blake Feagles 16-yard run in the second quarter. The rest of the way it was all Ramapo. On Sept. 23 Ridgewood play well at Don Bosco but were no match for the Ironmen in a 35-0 loss in Ramsey.
Girls volleyball
The Ridgewood team is only 2-5, but they have been battling and lost another three-game match, this time with Northern Highlands on Tuesday, 23-25, 25-21, 12-25. Rachel Kilinski and Stephanie Rudd had seven kills each for the Maroons. Sarah Johnson chipped in six digs while Stephanie Rudd added 13 assists in the Big North loss in Allendale.
Boys soccer
The Ridgewood boys had a short week with the holidays as they took the lone game on the game on Monday, a 3-0 loss to Big North rival, Northern Highlands in a battle between two of the better teams in the county. Ridgewood fell to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Ridgewood offense was stymied by the Highlanders defense and the Maroons could not stop Highland's Steve DiBella who put three goals in the net to sink Ridgewood. The game was only 1-0 at halftime, but DiBella continued his hot play with a pair of goals in the second half.
Luckily, Ridgewood was able to rebound with a big 3-2 victory over the Comets of Hackensack. The boys are the 5th seed in the Bergen County Tournament.
