Mangia Trattoria Kneads Italian Inspirations into Superb Cuisine
From the checkered tabletops to the masterful mussels, this Prospect Street restaurant didn't disappoint.
Checkered tablecloths decorate the top of each table at , a quaint BYOB eatery ideal for a relaxed night out.
The massive menu covers all the classics, and some original creations like Spaghetti Alla Frank Sinatra. After a long internal debate between appetizer choices — mussels or a tri color salad? — my waiter, Michael swoops in informing me that entrees are served with a salad. Mussels it is!
After a recent experience with some disappointing mussels — the restaurant in question will remain nameless — I was looking to remind myself why I always opt for these delicious bivalves. Next, I'm presented with a small version of Mangia’s classic Margherita pizza. The crispy crust topped with marinara, mozzarella and fresh basil answers my question why Mangia doesn’t serve pizza by the slice. No one could stop after just one slice!
For the entree, I opted for one of the specials of the evening: goat cheese ravioli in a cream sauce with capers, topped with salmon. This rich, heavy dish is not for those with a small appetite. It's especially not for those watching their weight; polishing off the entire delicious dish is a must.

Ron Mortellaro, the restaurant’s chef of five months, says he's constantly drawing inspiration from northern Italy in devising the restaurant’s weekly specials.
Though I was too stuffed to even consider dessert, Michael tried to entice me with Mangia’s homemade tiramisu. The cannoli, cheesecake and coconut cake also looked amazing.
This is the place for diners looking for a lively meal. While many couples shared a bottle of red wine and quiet conversation, most of the crowd was seemingly playing catch-up with great friends over dinner at their favorite Italian eatery.
