Maroons Football Trounces Highwaymen

Team hopeful it can still make the playoffs

It took three more days, but Ridgewood football team finally got their battle with Teaneck in on Tuesday afternoon.

After an October snowstorm cancelled the game on Saturday in Teaneck, both teams finally got on the turf at Ridgewood High School despite power outages at the school. The Maroons were glad to be on the field en route to a 41-0 victory over Teaneck in a Big North battle.

The win raised Ridgewood's record to 3-4 on the season and allowed the Maroons to still think about slipping into the state playoffs.

"A lot of teams could have just given up at 1-3 or 1-4," said Ridgewood head coach Chuck Johnson about his team coming back after the season's start. "This team has not given up."

Ridgewood hosts Passaic on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. A Maroons win over the Indians would give Ridgewood a .500 record and make them eligible for the state playoffs. The Maroons still need to be in the top eight of the Group 4 North 1 state sectional based on power points.

Ridgewood was in 11th spot in the section with 70 points, 19 behind eighth-seeded Passaic Tech, but most of the teams ahead of Ridgewood had already completed their eight games for the state cutoff with the Maroons eighth game coming Saturday.

"We just have to take care of our business," said Johnson of the slim playoff possibilities.

In the victory over Teaneck, sophomore quarterback Jamal Locke had a strong debut as a starter with three touchdown passes while senior fullback Peter Reuter ran for a pair of touchdowns while catching one of Locke's throws for a score.
