Presentations On Ridgewood Full-Day Kindergarten Program Are Next Month
Taxes would increase $111 if voters in November approve implementing the program.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Two informal presentations on bringing full-day kindergarten to the village will be held next month.
The presentations will be Oct. 5 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Oct. 27 at George Washington Middle School. Both presentations will begin at 7 p.m.
Ridgewood is the only remaining school district in Bergen County not to have a full-day kindergarten program. Residents will vote Nov. 8 on bringing it to the district beginning with the 2017-18 school year. If approved, the average homeowner would pay $111 more in taxes.

Children would attend school 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Proponents of the plan argue that a full-day program allows children structured socialization and free time to play. Children often learn valuable social skills during free time, something a half-day program does not allow time for.

The full-day program would make sue of learning centers, which are structure play experiences designed to reinforce conceptual learning. Students would also create games and play make-believe alone and with others.
Since 2014, Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, Rutherford, Mahwah, Waldwick, and Midland Park have implemented full-day kindergarten programs.
