Officials are warning residents not to approach racoons that may be out during the day.

The notice said that raccoons are breeding this time of year and will often look for food and water for their babies during the day in dumpsters, garbage cans, pools, and other water sources.
“You should never attempt to go near, photograph, or capture wildlife,” said Carol Tyler, an animal control officer with Tyco Animal Control. Tyco handles animal control services for 21 Bergen County municipalities.

“Most wildlife that’s out there is fine and healthy,” Tyler said. “But if an animal is acting strangely and look like it’s drunk or is attacking a tire or something like that, stay away and call the police or call us.”
The notice said that residents should not attempt to feed feral animals or leave food or water out for them.
