RHS Baseball, Softball Drives Come to an End

But Maroons boys track captures sectional title

The Ridgewood baseball and softball seasons came to a screeching halt at the same school on the same day and about 100 yards apart.

On the baseball front, third-seeded Ridgewood dropped an 11-4 decision at second-seeded Morris Knolls on Tuesday. And just down the hill, the third-seeded Ridgewood softball team also fell, a 7-1 decision against second-seeded Morris Knolls in the Group 4 North 1 state semi-final game.

On a sunnier note, the track and field Ridgewood boys took home the Group 4 North 1 state sectional title with 94 points, outdistancing Montclair with 71.
On the girls side the Lady Maroons gave Randolph a run for its money in the Group 4 North 1 section, but fell short with 86.33 points. Randolph had 98.50 points. Ridgewood beat out Passaic Tech by more than 15 points for second.

Baseball

Before the Ridgewood offense could get going, the Maroons were already down 9-1 in the fourth inning. Ridgewood rebounded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to five, 9-4, but the Maroons could not get any closer.
Offensively for Ridgewood, Doug Licitra had a big game in a losing effort going 2-for-3 including a solo home run. Frank Paleno chipped in a double and two RBI for the Maroons cause.

Softball

The Ridgewood softball season came to a close, certainly one not in line with expectations. The pre-season darlings of North Jersey faltered to Morris Nolls in its final game.

Teresa Funk had the lone Maroons RBI with a double in the sixth inning as for most of the game Ridgewood was befuddled by Morris Knolls pitcher Caitlin O'Connor. The Lady Maroons could only get three hits off of O'Connor and were struck out seven times.

While Ridgewood pitcher Nicole Hroncich shut down Morris Knolls in the first inning, the same could not be said in the second inning as she gave up three runs.
The Lady Maroons were down 3-0 in the first four innings and were still in shouting distance.

But three runs off the bats of Morris Knolls put the clincher on Ridgewood as they found themselves down 6-0.

The Lady Maroons ended their season at 17-7. Not a bad season, but certainly not what the girls hoped for.

Boys track and field

The track and field team had some good moments at the Bergen Meet of Champions on May 31 and the Group 4 championships last Friday and Saturday.

On the boys side, junior Evan Bartlik took home the lone title at the BMOC and struck gold in the high jump. Senior Mohamed Eid came in second in the 3,200 meters at the county meet.

The best finish at the Group 4 meet was Levi Jennings in the 1,600 meters with a second place finish and a trip to the State Meet of Champions. Bartlik came in fourth in the triple jump along with a bid in the SMOC.

Kayla Polcari led the way in winning the pole vault while Sara DaVita garnered two, second place finishes in the high jump and the 100 meter hurdles at the county meet. Hanako Shigenobu gained the other second place finish, in the 800 meters.

The 1,600 meter relay team of  Charlotte Criqui, Shigenobu, Andina Toscano, Micaela McPadden came in third while Caroline Davidson grabbed third in the 1,600 individual race. In the two mile Laura Weisberger was third.

At the Group 4 girls meet only Polcari garnered a top three finish with a second in the pole vault.
