RHS Sophomore Organizes Concert Of Student Musicians

Sophia Swanson has helped create Ridgewood ARTBeat 2017 — an event designed to highlight student musicians.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Sophia Swanson and a group of students have created a special event to highlight their peers' musical talents and introduce them to one of the most overlooked musical venues in the village — the Bandshell.

Swanson, a sophomore, has worked extensively for eight months with the school's administration and the special student-run ARTBeat Committee to create Ridgewood ARTBeat 2017.

The annual event will highlight the musical talents of five student bands. The concert is June 6 from 8:30 to 9:45 p.m.

"My vision for Ridgewood ARTBeat 2017 is a place where young adults collaborate to produce a night that celebrates creativity and the many artistic talents inside our community," Swanson said.

Swanson said many students often walk by the Bandshell and may not realize the musical talents that are showcased there every summer.

It is at these summer performances Swanson noticed an absence of young musicians, which, she said was, "a shame considering the beautiful location and venue."

Swanson helped organize the concert for her Girl Scout Gold Award community service project.
