Ridgewood Boys and Girls Lacrosse Teams Score Big in Tournament Action

Both teams advance to the semi-finals in the county tournament

Sally Jentis, Lindsay Weiner and Caroline Moore each scored a pair of goals and 17 other players contributed a goal apiece as the Ridgewood Lady Maroons easily defeated Holy Angels 23-1 in the quarter-final round of the Bergen County Lacrosse Tournament played at IHA in Washington Township on Saturday.

Kelsi Smesko assisted on five goals for the Maroons. Sammy Giordano, who was the only field player for Ridgewood that did not put one into the net, did register three assists in the game. 

The goalie tandem of Isabel Sippel and Zoe Ferguson held Holy Angels to only one goal and came up with a total of seven saves in the contest.

Ridgewood now advances to the semifinals which will be played on Sunday, May 8 starting at 3:15 p.m. at IHA. The Maroons will face Mahwah, who advanced by narrowly defeating a tough Glen Rock squad, 13-11.

In the other semifinal game, IHA will do battle with Indian Hills next Sunday at 1:30.

BOYS TEAM DOWNS FAIR LAWN IN THEIR QUARTERFINAL MATCH ON SUNDAY

The Ridgewood Maroons (6-3), the top seed in the tournament faced the Fair Lawn Cutters (5-3) which came into the tournament as the ninth seed, and emerged with a dominating 15-2 victory. 

Star Vann Jorgensen scored three times and Garrett Clarke, Kevin Entwistle and Tanner Moss each tallied twice to help lead the team to the win in the quarterfinals of the of the County Tournament played at River Dell High School in Oradell on Sunday. 

It was Ridgewood’s defense that established and set the tone for the game and simply would not allow Fair Lawn into the Maroons’ end of the field. 

Ridgewood was simply overpowering as the built a 12-0 first half lead in the contest.

The goalie tandem of Noah Pounds and Evan Mattessich recorded 11 saves in the game and kept Fair Lawn off the board until the Cutters hit a pair of goals late in the fourth quarter. 

Ridgewood will face Ramapo (9-3) in the tournament semifinal next Sunday, May 8 at Indian Hills High School in Oakland.

Before then, the Maroons are scheduled to host regular season games this week against Don Bosco Prep on Wednesday and Mahwah on Friday.  Incidentally, both of those teams are the contestants in the other semifinal of the tournament.
