Ridgewood Cop, Bank Teller Prevent Woman From Being Scammed: Report

Distraught woman tried to withdraw a large amount of cash from Chase Bank while on the phone with scammer.

The quick actions of a bank teller and village police officer kept a woman from being defrauded in a telephone scam Tuesday.

Police said that a distraught woman on her cell phone entered Chase Bank in Ridgewood to withdraw a large amount of money, NorthJersey.com reported.

Police said the person on other end of the call wouldn’t get off until the woman withdrew the money, the website reported; Policeman Paul Dinice was at the bank less than a minute after a bank teller called 911.

The scammer told the woman she had overdue taxes and if she didn’t pay them immediately, she’d be arrested, the website reported; Dinice told the woman what was happening and had her hang up her phone.

Lyons could not be reached for comment.

The Internal Revenue Service will not call individuals who have late or overdue taxes. The agency sends delinquents letters in the mail.
