Ridgewood Police Warn Of Diversion Burglaries

BREAKING: One person distracts a homeowner while another breaks into a home and burglarizes it.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Village police are warning residents about diversion burglaries that have occurred in neighboring municipalities recently.

Diversion burglaries are when someone posing as a utility employee, municipal worker or handyman comes to the front door and talks to someone or asks them to take them to another part of the property while an accomplice enters and burglarizes the home.

Residents should verify that they are speaking to a legitimate worker or utility employee before speaking with someone who comes to their door, police said. Legitimate workers should have photo identification with them or wear the logo of a utility company or service.
