Ridgewood School District Collecting Coins For Hurricane Harvey Schools

The Red Cross will use the money to help Houston-area schools recover from the storm. The drive will be from Thursday through Tuesday.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Village students can make a difference in the lives of Houston and all it will take is pocket change.

The school district is hosting a coin drive beginning Thursday, the first day of school, until Tuesday. Students and their families who wish to contribute may bring their coins to school and place them in designated buckets.

The district will donate all of the coins to the American Red Cross. The national nonprofit will use the funds to help Houston-area schools recover from Hurricane Harvey.

More than 160 Texas school districts have delayed their schools opening due to the hurricane, Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said.

The district has also partnered with the Ridgewood AM Rotary for its Soles 4 Souls campaign. The rotary collected nearly 14,000 pairs of shoes in 2015.
