In 1975, Mary Kennedy, of Pearl River directed a project at the Historical Society of Rockland County to create a quilt to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial. When the society asked for 30 quilters to volunteer, 60 turned out; so two quilts were made. The project was partially funded through the America the Beautiful Fund of New York.
The quilts are known today as the Day Quilt and the Night Quilt. However, when they were being constructed they were known as the Ladentown Quilt, because much of the work was done at the Ladentown Methodist Church, and the Pearl River Quilt, because most of the volunteers who worked on it (in various locations, including the Pearl River Public Library) were residents of that area.
Each quilt square represents a historically significant person, place or event in Rockland County. They are a colorful and beautiful way to learn about Rockland History.
The HSRC is proud to have these two beautiful quilts on display right now in the History Center. Exhibition hours are Wed - Sun; 12pm - 4pm. They will be on view through November 1, 2015.
