RSO to perform on May 1

The Ridgewood Symphony will wrap up its 75th anniversary season with a concert featuring violin prodigy, Joseph Hsia.

The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 75th anniversary season with a concert featuring 14-year-old violinist Joseph Hsia in Sarasate’s soulful and fiery “Zigeunerweisen.”

The concert will take place on May 1 at 8:00 PM at West Side Presbyterian Church, which is located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. Advance single tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students; at the door ticket prices are $28, $23, and $13 respectively.

The program will also include Holst’s “Mars” from The Planets, Borodin’s, “Polovetsian Dances,” and Faure’s “Pavane.” Diane Wittry will conduct the orchestra. This concert will conclude her first year as RSO Artistic Director and Conductor. Members of the Ridgewood Concert Band and the West Side Presbyterian Church Choir will collaborate with the RSO for this concert.

Joseph Hsia, an eighth grader from West Windsor, NJ, began playing the violin at age five. Three years later he won first place in the Westminster Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, which allowed him to perform with the Orchestra at Richardson Hall at Princeton. Joseph has also won competitions sponsored by the New Jersey Music Teachers Association, the Music Teachers National Association, the American Fine Arts Festival, Young Classical Virtuosos of Tomorrow, and Golden Strings of America. Despite his youth, he has already performed at such prestigious concert halls as the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, and the Liszt School of Music in Weimar, Germany. He has also soloed with the Ocean City POPS and Sinfonietta Nova Orchestra. Joseph currently studies with Sheryl Staples, the Associate Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.
