Scams And More Unlocked Cars: Glen Rock Police Blotter
Glen Rock police responded to 329 calls for service during the week of May 3, police officials said.

11:10 a.m. – A Glen Rock resident reported that while attempting to file their 2020 taxes on-line they learned that someone had fraudulently filed a tax return using their social security number. The IRS has been notified and an investigation is in progress.

The IRS advises that Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen personal information, including your Social Security number, to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, notify the IRS and continue to pay your taxes and file your tax return, even if you must file a paper return.

12:50 p.m. – A Fair Lawn woman reported that a tire on her 2007 Honda Odyssey had been slashed while parked in a parking lot on the 1000 block of Maple Avenue. With the assistance of an area business who provided officers access to their video surveillance, D/Sgt. Jim Calaski and P.O. Nick Onove were able to identify the actor. Subsequently, P.O. Onove charged a 24-year-old Bloomfield man with one count of Criminal Mischief. The matter was determined to have been related to a workplace dispute. The subject’s employment was also terminated.

5:32 p.m. – A Glen Rock resident reported falling victim to a gift card scam. The victim had received an email from someone impersonating his employer requesting a favor. The purported employer asked that the victim purchase $ 1,000 worth of Google Play gift cards and forward the PIN number identification via text. The victim later learned that he had been the victim of a scam.

12:03 p.m. – The administration of the Glen Rock High School reported that a student had entered the school with a knife in her backpack. The backpack had been left unattended which led school officials to the discovery. An investigation by the Glen Rock Police Department’s juvenile officer found that the knife, used for woodworking, had not been brought to school for the purpose of doing harm. However, the possession on school grounds was both unlawful and a violation of school policy. The matter was handled informally in accordance with juvenile justice protocols. Due to New Jersey’s juvenile confidentiality laws, no further information is subject to public release.

6:18 p.m. – A Glen Rock woman who left her wallet on the front seat of her unlocked vehicle reported that the wallet had been stolen. The vehicle had been parked on Henry Street between approximately 4:30 PM and the time of the report. The investigating officer spoke with several area residents; however, none had observed anything, nor could any relevant video surveillance be recovered.

10:24 a.m. – A Cumberland Road resident reported that their 2019 Buick Encore was stolen from the area of their residence overnight. The vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside. Inside the vehicle was sports equipment, which included lacrosse, basketball, and baseball equipment. The resident’s second vehicle, which had also been left unlocked, was entered with baseball equipment taken. In total approximately $ 1,770 worth of property had been taken. A credit card belonging to the resident was also used to pay for $499 worth of Uber rides.
Using the vehicle’s “OnStar” system it was tracked to 12th Street in Newark where Newark Police were able to recover the vehicle.
While canvassing the area, officers located a green 2000 Buick Lesabre abandoned near the corner of Cumberland Road and Tonawanda Road. The vehicle VIN number was tampered with and visible inside were heroin folds and crack cocaine vials. The vehicle was impounded for investigation.

11:54 a.m. – P.O. Matt Stanislao was dispatched to Route 208 North near Lincoln Avenue to investigate a report of a man who appeared to be pouring gasoline from a gas can onto the side of the highway. When the officer located the man, he found him to be in possession of a chainsaw, which was on the ground running. The subject, a 73-year-old Elmwood Park man, explained that he was on the highway cutting firewood to bring home. Prior to doing so, he stood on the side of the highway filling his chainsaw with gas.
The officer explained to the man that the shoulder of the highway is restricted to emergency stopping and that only Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) maintenance crews are permitted to maintain trees along the highway. The man was directed to leave the area and did so without incident. His information was retained in case D.O.T. officials wish to pursue the matter.

6:41 a.m. – A Bedford Place resident reported damage to a family member’s vehicle parked in their driveway. According to the complainant the rear window of the vehicle was discovered broken just prior to police being notified. To the best of her knowledge, it was not broken when the vehicle was parked there the night before. The resident was home and did not see or hear anything. Nothing inside the vehicle appeared to be tampered with, however the owner was not present to determine if anything was taken.
