A man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police standoff in Lyndhurst, officials said.

LYNDHURST, NJ — A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Lyndhurst on Thursday morning after a standoff with a SWAT Team, officials said.

Around 5: 30 a.m. on Thursday, members of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lyndhurst Police Department tried to arrest a man at his home on Lake Avenue, but the man barricaded himself inside, said Jeff Angermeyer, the chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

The Bergen County Regional SWAT Team responded and tried to negotiate with the man, Angermeyer said.

The man's name is being withheld until next of kin are notified, he said. No further details were available Thursday afternoon.

Residents of several streets in Lyndhurst were told to stay in their basements and shelter in place Thursday morning, and the opening of an area elementary school was delayed due to the police activity.

"Please avoid the area of Summit Avenue and Lake Avenue due to police activity," Lyndhurst's Office of Emergency Management said in a message around 7 a.m. "All residents on Lake Avenue between Orient Way and Summit Avenue are to shelter in place in their basements."

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office was notified about the shooting, but designated the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to lead the investigation, Angermeyer said. The investigation is continuing, he said.

The Union City Prosecutor's Office deferred all questions to Bergen County.
