WESTWOOD, NJ — A hotly anticipated hot dog restaurant opened Sunday in Westwood, featuring "secret recipe" dogs in collaboration in Thumann's.

Founder Dan DeMiglio, who had closed his grandfather's longtime restaurant — Callahan's — due to "pandemic difficulties," is trying his hand at a completely original idea, 1950 Originals.

Located at the former Jack's Cafe site across the street from the Westwood Train Station, the new restaurant offers dogs in types like the CBPB (candied bacon peanut butter), as well as Street Cart (with ketchup, mayo, and potato sticks), and hot honey pimento cheese.

The team at the restaurant said they have "collaborated with Thumann’s to develop two one-of-a-kind, secret recipe hot dogs: 1) Original (pork and beef) and 2) Signature (100 percent beef).

“You won’t be able to find these hot dogs anywhere other than our Westwood store,” said DeMiglio last week. “But eventually, we plan on selling them through other avenues like grocery stores and shipping nationally.”

Where does the name come from?

DeMiglio wanted to honor his grandfather, Leonard “Artie” Castrianni, who started Callahan's in Fort Lee in 1950.

The store also features artwork from the team. "It’s as if you are entering our very own sketchbook," said a spokesperson.

You can visit 1950 Originals at 325 Broadway, Westwood, and find out more here: www.1950originals.com. You can also see their menu items and artwork on their Instagram here.
