VIDEO: Peanut Butter Jar Terrorized Hoboken No-Nut Cafe During Flooding
In a lighter moment from Friday's floods, a peanut butter jar floated dangerously close to the Hoboken area's only nut-free cafe. See video.
HOBOKEN, NJ — Food allergies are no laughing matter, and have proven fatal for kids after one accidental taste.
That's why, when artists Jessica and Jeff Dyer opened a corner coffee shop in Hoboken in late 2019, they made sure their business was completely nut-free.
But they've endured several struggles — most notably, having to close during pandemic lockdowns months after opening. "Joey No Nuts" eventually reopened, keeping their indoor area shut and serving people (including neighbor Joe Pantoliano) at their pickup window.

But they recently suffered a threat that gave them a bit of levity on a challenging day for Hoboken.
During flooding last week in the mile-square city, a jar of peanut butter began floating right toward the establishment's front door.

The area was hit with an unprecedented rainstorm at high tide, dumping more than three inches of rain. And while the mile-square city installed floodgates this year to stop cars from driving through floods, the gate near the shop failed to go down automatically on Friday, Jess Dyer said.
Each time a car drove past Willow Avenue and Seventh Street, waves of water hit the shop.
Then, Jess noted, she had to laugh when she saw a can of Pam and container of the dreaded peanut butter flowing straight toward the entrance on Willow Avenue.
"I felt mildly threatened by that giant tub of peanut butter floating towards our nut-free establishment," she mused. "But the irony was not lost on me. It was too funny!"
She took this video of the aggressors:
Soon after, the floods began receding with the tides (see photos of the worst of Hoboken's flooding here).
Skeleton Missing: Reward
As if the flooding wasn't enough, later in the day, someone decided to steal the four-year-old skeleton decoration that the shop places outside during every spooky season.
Jeff Dyer, an artist and owner of the shop, has created a wanted poster. (See it above.)
"He [the skeleton] was store-bought, but Jeff decorated his face like a sugar skull and put clothes and gasses on him and made him more of a persona," Jess said this week. "We’ve had him since we opened the shop four years ago today! We really love Halloween and put him out early because our customers and neighbors love him too."
Customers apparently would like Joey back as well.
"My kids were so excited that he was back," wrote a fan on Instagram.
"How rude! Hopefully they’ll sober up this morning," said another.
"Will keep an eye out. Or, like Joey, both eyes out," added a local wag.
The shop owners have promised a free coffee to the person who wrangles him home. If you have information about the Joey No Nuts Skeleton, call 201-253-0099.
