Sunflowers Blossom While Signs Of Summer Fade Away

Fading Signs of Summer

One thing my daughter likes to do every summer is to plant a flower garden at our country house.  There’s a flat spot she selected a few years ago -- just outside to the right of our front porch – that has been designated as the place where wild flowers grow.

Just like she has done for several Mays before, this Memorial Day my 15 year old  sprinkled some sunflower seeds in the fresh dirt and covered them. She always chooses sunflowers because they can grow to over 6 feet tall, are pretty and don’t require much tending to in order to grow into tall, healthy stalks.

Last weekend, we drove up to Brant Lake to check out the plumbing issues that have kept us from using our house since the 4th of July. When we got there, we were greeted by the most amazing and beautiful sight of more than a dozen extra tall sunflowers that had grown from just a handful of seeds to giant blossoms in a matter of weeks.

The sight of the sunflower garden gave us pause to think just how fast time flies. It made us remember that sometimes time is not counted in days or weeks but just how quickly sunflowers do grow.

As summer comes to an end, we're finding that time is not so much measured by the clock or calendar, but by the sudden coolness of a late summer night’s breeze, a fading tan line, or just how loud the school bell will ring on the first day of school.

Just where did the summer go, we want to know? Let's enjoy it before these lazy days of summer fade away altogether. Fall is just around the corner.
