Would You Rather Be Stress Less Or Live With a Lazy Boy?

My husband's long-awaited chair brings new meaning to his favorite recliner.

There’s something about a Lazy Boy that has made it a forbidden chair in our house, at least as far as I'm concerned.  My husband has wanted this recliner for years, and every so often, he’ll make a pitch for one.

Before we were married, Bob, the bachelor, had an old, brownish tweed Lazy Boy that found its way from his “man cave” to our new home. It didn’t match anything and was too big for the room we had it in. It stuck out like a sore thumb with my Martha Stewart Living style.

The minute I could sell my new husband on new furniture and décor, out it went. Life was good – at least for awhile. One day, we were cleaning out my parents’ house and their Lazy Boy wound up in our “big room.”

I tried to brighten it up with some decorative pillows but it still looked like the Lazy Boy from my parent's house. I have to admit, the electric recliner did come in handy during Bob’s post-surgery recovery, but once he was back in good health, the chair was out the door.

Now that Bob has more time on his hands, the debate recently popped up again. He tried to convince me to see it from his point of view. “But they’re comfortable, they're cozy. They recline. Wouldn’t one go great in the same spot as that chair over there?” he tried to convince me as he pointed to the one we now have.

“Oh, you mean the one you spilled an entire cup of coffee on last week? I answered back. Was there a method to his madness, I wondered.

I was beginning to break. Bob never asks for anything – and maybe they’ve changed styles after all these years, I thought. At least it wouldn’t hurt to look, so off we went to the biggest Lazy Boy showroom around.

We walked around the Lazy Boy showroom. They’re even BIGGER than ever, I mumbled. Some even had cup holders. No way was one of THEM coming into our house, I silently thought. It wouldn’t fit our space even if we loved it.

As we ambled around the back of the showroom, though, I had to admit, Lazy Boys had come a long way. There were smaller ones, medium size ones, and some that, well, even looked nice. Finally, a smaller green apple one caught even my critical eye. I convinced Bob to “sleep on it” in case we saw something better, hoping to buy a little more time.

That night, my friend told me about a “Stress Less” recliner. The next day we went to see one similar to that brand at a local department store. It was much more comfortable than a Lazy Boy and had a sleeker, modern look with an ergonomic, Scandanavian design. Yes, we both actually agreed that it would work in our eclectic room.

The best part was that the chair was on sale last weekend for Father’s Day. A deal was a deal. We only wished we could wrap it up right then and there and take it home in time for the evening ball game -- or Father's Day, at least. In the end, we both went home happy.

Maybe it’s the chair’s name that really clinched the deal. After all, I’d rather be “Stress Less” than living with a “Lazy Boy”!

We just heard the new recliner will be delivered tomorrow. I'll race you to the new chair, Bob.
