Fatal Accidents Jumped this Year in Bergen County

Fatal car crashes have increased by 28% in Bergen County in 2010, according to figures compiled by the state police.

As of Tuesday, there had been 32 fatal accidents in the county, with 33 deaths, compared with last year's 25 crashes and 26 deaths.

Hackensack, Paramus, Fort Lee and Teaneck have each had three fatal accidents this year, most in the county.

The most recent Paramus fatal crash was in July. In that accident, a 49-year-old who crashed his car into a utility pole on Route 4 after colliding with another vehicle, NorthJersey.com reported. In April, a 69-year-old Clifton man was killed trying to cross Route 17. The third accident took place in January, on Farview Avenue.

Two of Fort Lee's three fatal accidents took place at the George Washington Bridge. In April, a man was killed after his car hit a truck, NJ.com reported. And in May, a motorcyclist died on Route 46 on the way to the bridge during a police chase, according to MyFoxNY.com. A Fort Lee woman died in March after she was hit by a car on Lemoine Avenue, NorthJersey.com reported.

The latest of Teaneck's three fatal crashes victims was Police Officer John Abraham. He was killed when his patrol car  on Teaneck Road. The driver of a Honda Civic was killed in May, when he crashed while traveling east in a westbound lane, MyFoxNY.com said.

The 33 fatalities represent a drop from the late-1990s and early-2000s. An average of 47 people died each year on Bergen County roads from 1998 to 2005.
