Combining her love of running with an earnest desire to help her community, a student at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School recently helped to raise over $5,000 for local families affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Courtney Howley, a junior, quickly organized a Sandy Relief 3K Run/Walk race after learning that 36 families in her community had been displaced by the storm. She hoped to raise at least $1,000 and was pleasantly surprised when 167 runners participated. Many contributed above and beyond the suggested $10 donation.
"It was great to be able to help the families that are right here in our own community," said Howley. "We are also so fortunate to live in such a great town and it was an honor to help with the relief efforts."
The R-FH Key Club, a student organization dedicated to community service, registered the runners. The R-FH Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) assisted with the collection and distribution of funds. Superintendent of Schools Peter Righi announced the start and finish of the race.
The women's race winner was Cate Robbie of Fair Haven, who recently won the Little Silver 5K race. John Gibney, an R-FH junior, was the winner of the men's race.
