Congregation B'nai Israel pays Tribute to Beloved Cantor Marla Barugel

On Sunday, June 2, at 5 p.m., Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) in Rumson will honor Cantor Marla Barugel for her 26 years of dedication, professional commitment and musical leadership. 

Cantor Barugel, who becomes Cantor Emerita in July, will be leaving Congregation B’nai Israel to pursue new endeavors. Congregants, friends, former and present students and their families are welcome to attend as well as send reminiscences and photos.

During her tenure at CBI, Cantor served as teacher, advisor, musical leader and friend. She officiated at the B’nai Mitzvah ceremonies of more than 600 students, and participated in numerous life cycle events such as baby namings, weddings, funerals and mourning services.

She also provided pastoral support by visiting and singing to congregants at their bedsides in the hospital. Her warmth and caring personality consoled many congregants in their time of need. 

Cantor delighted in teaching Jewish prayer and song as well as instructing both children and adults in the art of Torah and Haftarah cantillation.             

The tribute event is free, but reservations are required by May 26. Sponsorships for the tribute reception are also available for $36.
