Fair Haven Fire Chief Responds to Arrest of Firefighter Nicholas Joyce

Former Boy Scout Nicholas Joyce has been suspended from the Fair Haven Fire Department pending the criminal investigation.

Fair Haven, NJ - The Chief of the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Department, Michael Wiehl, released this following statement about Nicholas Joyce, the 19-year-old volunteer firefighter who is charged with intentionally setting fire to a church shed on Saturday, and then returning with his fire company to put it out.

"On April 2nd, the Fair Haven Police Department informed me that they were charging Nicholas Joyce with one count of second-degree arson for a fire that occurred on April 1st on the grounds of the United Methodist church in a storage shed," Wiehl said in an emailed statement.

Upon learning this, Mr. Joyce was immediately suspended from any and all activities within the Fire Company until the conclusion of any criminal investigations. As this is an ongoing investigation no comments will be made regarding any criminal charges and all inquiries shall be directed to the Monmouth County Prosecutors office or the Fair Haven police Department, Wiehl said.
