RCDS Celebrates Literary Classics at Annual Book Fair

The Rumson Country Day School's Parent Council kicked off the holiday season by hosting the annual Book Fair in Skirkanich Commons in Riker Hall. Celebrating the classics in literature, the family event began on December 2, and lasted for three days. The event began with Family Reading Night, featuring Storytime for Children, which celebrated the classics on Monday evening. As a special treat, Mr. Small read Harold and the Purple Crayon, a 1955 children's classic by Crockett Johnson. Additional readings, crafts and delicious snacks were available for nursery – fourth grade students and their families.

RCDS students had the opportunity to attend the Book Fair and enjoy tasty treats from the Gator Café during the school day with special selections from Mr. Small’s classic collection for readers of all ages including: Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, Frederick by Leo Leonni, and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger to name a few. "We want to inspire children to read more and enjoy classic literature. Parent Council is thrilled to play a role in generating that excitement and encourage students to discover the delights of a good book," said Parent Council President Jen Crowell '88.

This year, families had the opportunity to participate in a raffle. Special thanks goes to Lauren Carton for putting together wonderful raffle baskets with a variety of different themes that ranged from sports, arts & crafts and family games (with Mr. Small’s family favorites) and to the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank for their generous donation of four tickets to the holiday classic Wind in the Willows.

The Book Fair is a joint effort by two Parent Council Committees: the Book Fair Committee (Sarah Andreski, Chair and Mary Ryan, Co-Chair) and the Library Committee (Sarah Weiss, Chair and Sarah Cosgrove, Co-Chair). The much-anticipated event generated a significant amount of funding for the RCDS Library. A longtime tradition at RCDS, the Book Fair is a way to encourage students to further foster students’ love of reading.
