Watch Out For Phone Scam, Rumson Police Warn

Authorities are warning residents of a new scam where callers impersonate a family member in distress.

RUMSON, NJ — Rumson Police are warning residents of an ongoing phone scam where callers impersonate a family member in distress.

According to police, scammers are contacting victims and claiming that a loved one has been involved in a serious car accident or has been arrested.

The caller then says that the family member involved urgently needs cash (typically requested in the amount of $10,600), which must be sent immediately to a supposed “lawyer" to pay for bail or damages from the accident.
