SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A Union County resident handed over $15,000 after a caller claimed to be a bank examiner and instructed them to withdraw cash, police said.
The incident was reported June 16.
Police said the caller told the resident they were a fraud examiner working on behalf of a financial institution and said the money needed to be withdrawn and verified in person.
The resident withdrew $15,000 and provided the cash to the individual, police said.
After the exchange, the caller asked for additional money.
Police said the resident then became suspicious and did not provide any further funds.
No additional details about the caller were released.
