Free Classes for Senior Citizens at Union County College

Union County College will be offering free classes for senior citizens as part of the Learning Is ForEver (LIFE) Center throughout the county starting the week of September 6, 2011 and classes will run until the week of December 16, 2011.  Registration will be held during the first session of each class.  The following is the schedule for each location:

Peterstown Community Center, 622 Salem Avenue, Elizabeth.  Professor Lipkin will teach "Civil War" at 10:00am on Fridays.

O'Donnell Dempsey Senior Center, 408 Palmer Street, Elizabeth.  Professor Bruckner will teach "Music Appreciation" at 1:00pm on Tuesdays.

New Providence Senior Citizen Center, 15 East Fourth Street.  Professor Dunscombe will teach "Selected Topics in Bology" at 10:30am Mondays.

Plainfield Senior Center, 400 East Front Street.  Professor Dunscombe will teach“Selected Topics in Biology” at 12:30pm on Wednesdays.

Roselle Community Center, 1268 Shaffer Avenue.  Professor Nicoli will teach two courses, "Painting I" at 10:00am on Mondays and "Introduction to Drawing at 1:00pm on Mondays.

Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Avenue. Professor Christopher Gibbs will host "American Strategic Thought at 1:00pm on Tuesdays.

Sage ElderCare, 290 Broad Street, Summit.  Professor Comeau will host "American Literature I: The American Renaissance" at 1:00pm on Mondays.

Green Lane YM-YWHA, 501 Green Lane, Union.  Professor Toplansky will teach “Survey of Yiddish Literature” at 1:00pm on Wednesdays.

Green Lane YM-YWHA, 501 Green Lane, Union.  Professor Melman will offer “Nutrition in Health and Disease” at 12:30pm on Thursdays.

Westfield Senior Citizen Housing, 1133 Boynton Avenue, Westfield.  Professor Gibbs is hosting "English History 1789 to 1919 at 10:00am on Fridays

2nd Westfield Senior Citizen Housing, 1129 Boynton Avenue, Westfield.  Professor Coma will teach “Introduction to Drama” at 2:30pm on Thursdays.

The LIFE Center program provides free college-level academic education for senior citizens who are Union County residents, 62-years-old or over, at off-campus locations throughout the county.  These courses are offered at places and times convenient to the students, mainly at community and senior citizen centers.  Classes are free for the students and there is no limit to the number of courses that an individual may take.

These courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters only and each course is held for two hours a week for 15 weeks.  Students are eligible to earn up to three college credits to be used towards an associate or bachelor degree. The courses are usually offered in history, fine arts, political science, literature, health, and science.
