Little Bit's Story

The Inside Life of a Foster Family for a Cat Rescue

I recently participated in finding a home for one of the sweetest foster kittens that has come through the rescue (Cause 4 Paws) in recent years. Her name is Macy (aka Lil Bit) and she was special because despite her size, she had such personality.

In fact, because she was so small, she didn't go in the foster room with the other kittens. Instead, her foster parents let her stay upstairs with their own cats to keep an eye on her. The foster family had her for about three weeks so I was able to spend many hours with her. As you can see from the pictures, she made herself quite at home.

Lil Bit's favorite foods were pizza and cream cheese, and she was not shy about helping herself to them! And if your shoulder was available for roosting, she would nestle herself and start purring right in your ear. It was a purring that could break any bad mood and put a smile on your face.

I have always said the hardest part about fostering is when you get attached to the kitty and then you have to give him or her up. This was especially true with Macy. Since the foster family did not keep her confined to the foster room, she became part of the family. Macy slept in bed with them, watched tv with them, and even did sedoku with them. But at some point, every foster parent must decide whether this is the special kitty that you end up adopting as your own, or is this the special kitty that will make another family very happy.

Macy's foster family finally found the perfect family to adopt Macy and decided to adopt her to them. This family was perfect.  They had children to love Macy and a new kitten to play with her. Despite knowing that Macy was going to a great home and even arranging for a day and time to drop her off, I know it was hard for Macy's foster parents to give her up. Yet, sometimes the hardest decision is the one that reaps the largest reward.

I went with them to drop Macy off at her new home yesterday and the happiness and joy that the new family expressed while bringing Macy into their home washed away most of the sadness.

It's pretty hard to deny the family's adoration of their new pet when within ten minutes of arrival, Macy was appeared on their webcam so that distant friends and family could see her! I think Macy has a long life of pizza, cream cheese, and skyping in her future! And I think the foster family will soon have another special kitty warm their hearts and cause anguish at giving up.  But such is the life of a foster parent.
