Shady Lane Speedway Follow-Up

Let me begin by stating how flattered I felt that so many of you read and responded to my first blog here on the patch. I am glad that so many of you share my deep concern about this problem and offered ideas and feedback. My question now is: what do we do next?

I am committed to seeing this issue reach some sort of solution although I do not yet know what that solution will be. Speed humps? One way street? Who knows, but I do know something needs to be done. This weekend I witnessed time and again drivers using Shady Lane as if they were in the Indy 500 time trials.

However, this is really nothing to joke about. With summer looming, more kids will be out during the day and more drivers may be as well. While I don't think a quick solution should hastily be thrown into place, the coming of summer only raises the problem even higher.

So residents, what do we do? While it is one thing to blog or respond to a blog, the time to be more pro-active is now. Should residents hold a meeting to discuss the issue? If a meeting between residents and town officials is arranged, how many people will take the time to come? I know many of you have jobs and families and various other committments and spending an evening at a meeting which may or may not provide a solution isn't the most inviting idea. This isn't a critique, merely an observation.  I for one will be there if a meeting is suggested and arranged. I hope some of my neighbors and other residents of Shady Lane (and other concerned people) will try to make it as well. The more the better, if for no other reason than  to show that we truly do care about the welfare of each other and our children, and perhaps draw us closer as a community. Fanwood has alot to offer, and I'm excited about the potential of the Fanwood Crossing project. But like every town, we have issues, some very minor, others need a little more attention. From my comments and yours, I have a feeling that this particular public safety issue is one that needs some attention. And while whatever solution is decided will not make everyone happy, anything that prevents a tragedy is better than nothing.
