UPDATE: Mother Still In Critical Condition, Child, 3 Killed After Being Hit By Car In Union County

No charges filed yet against the driver who fatally hit a child and critically injured a mom crossing the street: police

PLAINFIELD, NJ — A three-year-old child was killed and the mother was seriously injured after they were hit by a car early Wednesday morning while crossing the street, Plainfield Police report.

The mother and child were walking across Park Avenue at the intersection of West Second Street in Plainfield on Wednesday around 9 a.m. when an adult man hit the two, police report.

Both victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment where the child died as a result of the injuries, police report.

The mother is remains in critical condition as of 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, police report.

The driver was the only one in the car at the time of the accident and was reportedly not injured.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the Plainfield Police Division Traffic Unit who is investigating.

"The investigation is continuing and it’s premature at this point to determine if the driver will face any related charges," police said.
