To support the Academy’s virtue theme for November - “Hope” - Mrs. Lynda England’s fifth grade students worked on a project searching for what hope means to them. Working in small groups, the fifth graders researched the meaning of hope using Bible verses and the dictionary. Next, they looked for symbols of hope in works of art, religion and our culture. In their research, the students found that the dove represents hope through the Holy Spirit, the fish symbolizes hope for Christians, and the anchor symbolizes hope in the Lord. To present their findings, the students collaborated to create posters that incorporated their research and their ideas as to why hope is important including - “Hope keeps you connected to God,” “Hope prevents your heart from breaking,” “Without hope the world would be a dull, empty place.”
In continuation, the fifth grade students searched to understand what faith means to other people. During a Religion lesson, the children were asked to answer the question, “Who shares my faith?” To answer the question, the students interviewed someone and asked questions such as “What is your favorite prayer and why,” “What does faith mean to you,” and “What do you hope for me?” Next, they recorded the responses and finally shared their findings with the class. We are very proud of the fifth graders and the growth they are showing on their journey to become closer to God.
Our students continue to excel in competition! We are thrilled to congratulate Hanna Guarnuccio, grade 8, and Raymond Lestarchick, grade 7, for tying for Second Place in the Patriot's Pen Essay Contest, sponsored by the Veterns of Foreign Wars. The essay contest’s theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” Their essays will be entered into the next level of competition – the regional competition.
