Fanwood Man Indicted On Murder, Arson Of Neighbor's Home

William Ahle, 70, of Fanwood, is accused of intentionally setting fire to his 82-year-old neighbor's home, according to the prosecutor.

FANWOOD, NJ — A 70-year-old Fanwood neighbor was indicted in connection with a deadly house fire in July, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said.

The Union County Grand Jury returned an indictment against William Ahle, said Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Fanwood Police Chief Daniel Kranz.

Ahle was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree home invasion burglary, and second-degree aggravated arson in connection with the death of his neighbor, Virginia Cranwell, 82, of Fanwood.

On July 25, 2025, at around 1:37 a.m., Fanwood Police and Fire were called to Kempshall Terrace for a 911 call reporting a house fire with possible entrapment.

Authorities found the neighbor, Ahle, who reported the fire, and told first responders that Cranwell was trapped inside, according to authorities.

Firefighters found Cranwell, who was pronounced dead.

An investigation was conducted by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and Special Prosecutions Unit/Arson Unit, Fanwood Police Department, Union County Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Department/Crime Scene Unit, Union County
Fire Investigation Task Force, New Jersey Division of Fire Safety – Fire Investigations/K-9 Unit, ATF, and
Union County Emergency Response Team/SWAT Units.

This investigation led to the identification of Ahle as the suspect.

Ahle was arrested and charged on Dec. 10, 2025.

Fire officials later determined the cause of the fire to be an intentional act. The Union County Medical Examiner’s Office officially ruled the death a homicide.
