FSPY gymnasts qualify for National Championships

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnastics Teams competed over the weekend of February 23-24. Fifteen of FSPY’s team members qualified for the National Championships being held in Wisconsin Dells, WI, from June18-23.

FSPY’s C Division team competed on Saturday, February 23 at Somerset Valley YMCA. They competed in four different age groups.

The 9 and under age group was won by Sophia Monteith. She also took home the 1st place award on Vault and Bars and placed 4th on Balance Beam and Floor. Aiden Steinwald captured 2nd place in the All-Around, Balance Beam and Floor, 3rd place on Bars and 4th place on Vault. Evan Doran took home the 1st place award on Balance Beam, 2nd place on Vault, 3rd place in the All-Around and 4th place on Bars. Alana Lamberti placed 3rd on Balance Beam.

Seven FSPY gymnasts were represented in the 10-year-old age group. Diane Morrow placed 3rd on Balance Beam, 4th on Floor, 6th in the All-Around and 7th on Bars. Fourth place on Bars went to Vivian Yu. Kiera Brennan took home 6th place on Bars and Balance Beam. Alyssa Larmore went home with 6th on Vault and 9th on Bars. Emma Johnston, Julia Squashic and Jenna Glander also represented the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA team in the 10-year-old age group.

The 11-year-old age group was represented by Xing Liao, who placed 4th on Vault and Bars.

The 12 and over age group saw Carol Oakes-Garcia place 3rd on Floor. Teammate Heather Sherman placed 7th on Bars.

FSPY’s A & B Division Gymnastics Teams competed on Sunday, February 24 at the Madison Area YMCA. Level 8 competed in the first session of the day in two age groups.

Ashley Sekiya* won Vault in the 15 and under age group. Teammate Jillian Miele* took home 2nd place on Vault and Balance Beam.

Rachel Tang*, competed in the 17 and over age group and brought home 1st place on Bars and 2nd on vault.

FSPY’s Level 7 team competed in two different age groups, in the second session of the day.

The 13 and under age group saw Alice Ping* win Vault just ahead of teammate Ava Fazio* who took 2nd. Fazio also placed 3rd on Balance Beam and Floor and 4th in the All-Around. Tehya Stephens* won on Floor and placed 3rd on Vault. Spencer Doran* also represented this age group.

Elizabeth Parvin* and Nicalina DelRosario competed in the 14 and over age group contributing to the team score.

FSPY’s Level 6, 13 and over competitors competed in the second session in two different age groups.

Jessica Dianda* won on Balance Beam and Floor and took 2nd on Vault and All-Around in the 13-year-old age group. Eva Pereira* had the winning Vault and also placed 6th on Floor and 7th in the All-Around. Also contributing to the team was Sarah Sicoli.*

Madalyn McEvoy* placed 2nd on Vault and Bars and 5th on Floor and All-Around in the 14 and over age group. Alana Beardsley* placed 2nd on Floor and 5th on Balance Beam. Jessica Glander also competed in this age group.

The 12 and younger Level 6 gymnasts competed in the 3rd session of the day in two different age groups.

Agnes Yee* won the Vault in the 11 and under age group while Olivia Stelzer* competed in the 12-year-old age group.

Gymnastics classes offered at the YMCA include parent-toddler, preschool and school age classes. They are offered Monday through Saturday. This is a great time to begin taking gymnastics at the YMCA! Registration is also open for summer school-age gymnastics camps. The Y offers dance and sports classes and camps as well. Birthday parties are also available.
