How PTSD Affects our local Veterans
Service Learning Project 7th Grade Park Middle School By Luke Ellison and Brian Huszcza

Our community issue for Service Learning is the lack of support and recognition that veterans receive both overseas as well as when they return home. The problem this creates a feeling for soldiers that they are being used and not given the proper attention that they need. Further, veterans who serve overseas and return home may also suffer from conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). First, this is an issue because soldiers emotions and feelings go unnoticed. This is not intentional at times but it can create a feeling that soldiers can have major negative reactions and tragic thoughts (McMichael, 2012).
Second, this problem exists from the lack of attention most Americans give to veterans.- (Jones, 2009) This could make a veterans depressed or feel like he or she does not feel that they are cared for. A lot of soldiers have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) -(McMichael, 2012)and a reason for that can be due to the lack of attention these wonderful veterans get. For example, a veteran can feel nervous (or stressed) about coming back home and feel that he or she is not wanted because he or she did not get enough support. For example, a veteran can feel nervous (or stressed) about coming back home and feel that
he or she is not wanted because he or she did not get enough support to feel that they are wanted.
Additionally, something that will surprise some people is that 21% of soldiers that come back home have PTSD (McMichael 2012). This means that only 20% of these soldiers get the treatment for PTSD.(McMichael 2012) This matters because if 500 soldiers come home from wherever they were stationed, that means 105 of these soldiers will have PTSD coming home, which results as only 21 soldiers receive treatment for PTSD and that leaves 84 of the soldiers with PTSD and no treatment.
Lastly, the real reason why people in general should care about this issue is that the veterans do so much for us like protecting us, keeping us all safe, and they do much much more for us. But we should ¨Serve those who serve us.” (Jones 2009). And these veterans should not be ignored, these wonderful people need to be noticed by more people. These veterans need to be able to get what they want or need. But as said above, people in the USA should “Serve those who served us.”
