MLK Day of Service in Photos: The Opening Ceremony

Volunteers of all ages gathered in the gym at the on a gorgeous Martin Luther King Day to kick off a day of volunteering that drew hundreds upon hundreds to locations in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.
"We started the day of service to make this a day on, rather than a day off, volunteering to make our home a better place," Co-chair and co-founder of SPF Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, explained.
Local neighbors, family, friends, girl scout troops, students, local charities and more listened to remarks by local officials and heard three musical numbers from the Scotch Plains Fanwood High School Choir. Hearts were touched by footage of Dr. King's inspiring words, followed by the singing of "We Shall Overcome," lead by Michael Goldstein. After the ceremony, volunteers headed off to activities at the JCC, the , , and more, energized and enthusistic to give back.
