Rutgers Diver Savana Trueb visits YMCA Camp to discuss water safety
The athlete spoke to campers at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA

On Friday, July 22, Rutgers Diver Savana Trueb visited the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s Splash Camp and discussed water safety with the Y’s campers.
This summer, there have been over a dozen accidental drownings in New Jersey. The New Jersey YMCA State Alliance, Trueb and office technology dealer Milner have teamed up to help educate the public about the steps they can take to be safe in and around water.
Trueb, who grew up going to YMCAs, is a swim safety ambassador for the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance. The Milner family is passionate about swim safety since they lost their son in a shallow water blackout incident. Shortly after his death in 2011, the family created the nonprofit organization Shallow Water Blackout Prevention in an effort to prevent more senseless deaths. As "America's swim instructor," the YMCA teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, if you know how to stay safe in and around water.

“The YMCA is committed to helping prevent accidental drownings and teaching both children and adults about water safety and the steps to take in the case of an emergency,” said Tracy Crane, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s Associate Executive Director. “Partnerships such as the one with Savana and Milner give us an even greater platform to communicate our message and hopefully prevent future accidental drownings in our communities.”
Trueb is a rising senior at Rutgers University and a member of the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. She transferred to Rutgers after her sophomore year from the University of Missouri, where she also was on the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. She is a member of Team USA Diving, Platform, and a member of the USA Diving Team for the 2022 World University Games. A former gymnast, Trueb has exceled in the sport of Diving, having competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and the NCAA Championships.

“I partnered up with the YMCA and Milner to educate and spread awareness about water safety,” Trueb said. “Being able to know the tools to help yourself in the water is very important. Water safety is the first step in mastering other water sports and games.”
