Scotch Plains Baker Creates Smash Hearts, Hot Cocoa Bombs

Vanessa Feliciano Cardinal is a self-taught baker following her passion. She is offering treats for Valentine's Day.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Working full-time with the New Jersey State Police Officer, Vanessa Feliciano Cardinal of Scotch Plains is following her passion for sweets with her business V's Sweet Treats.

Cardinal started making custom cakes and cupcakes when her daughter was 13 years old.

"I didn't want to spend money on cakes so I taught myself to make cakes," said Cardinal. "The first cake was horrible but I have come a long way and have been baking for 13 years and selling for 8 years now."

For the Valentine's Day holiday, Cardinal is offering cakes, cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries, hot cocoa bombs, and smash hearts — which are a hollow chocolate casing filled with a surprise such as candy. The inside of the smash hearts can be customized to order.

"I use a chocolate mold, paint it and fill it up with candies, pretzels, strawberries. And customers can use a mallet to smash it open and get a yummy treat inside," said Cardinal.

Cardinal also specializes in fondant cakes and other treats throughout the year. Working full time with the NJ State Police, Cardinal's daughter and husband will help her with her baked goods.

"They become my apprentices in training," said Cardinal.

Cardinal said business has been taking off and she is hoping one day to open her own bakery.

"I would love to do that," said Cardinal.
