Scotch Plains To Welcome New Mayor, Councilman In 2017
Democrats Mayor Kevin Glover and Councilwoman Colleen Gialanella both terms will expire on Dec. 31 making room for new additions.
SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A new mayor and councilman will be sworn in at the Scotch Plains Council Reorganization Meeting on Jan. 1.
Democrat Mayor Kevin Glover, whose term expires on Dec. 31, 2016, lost the election to Republican newcomer Alexander Smith. The vote came down to 4,536 for Glover and 5,972 for Smith.
Under Glover's leadership, he started many new traditions including Movie Nights, Cruisin' Car Shows and the Independence Day Fireworks. He provided focused leadership in preserving the history of Scotch Plains including the preservation and restoration of the historic Shady Rest. He served on numerous committees during his tenure on Council including the Memorial Parade and Concert Committee, Environmental Commission, and Planning Board, according to the Scotch Plains township.

Democrat Colleen Gialanella did not seek reelection this year and her term will also expire on Dec. 31, 2016. In her place Republican Theodore Spera will fill the seat in 2017.
The Township of Scotch Plains will hold its Council Reorganization Meeting on Sunday, Jan. 1 at noon at the Council Chambers at the Municipal Hall.
