2 Children Present In Secaucus Cane Corso Dog Attack, Police Say

There were two children present Monday night when three Cane Corso dogs attacked a man and a woman in the Red Roof Inn parking lot:

SECAUCUS, NJ — There were two children present Monday night when three Cane Corso dogs attacked a man and a woman at the Red Roof Inn in Secaucus, Police Chief Dennis Miller said in a new update on the story Friday afternoon.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday, the three dogs ran out of an open door in one of the motel rooms and ran into the parking lot, where a man, woman and two children — visitors from New York state — were walking.

The three Cane Corsos did not go after the children, but they did attack the two adults — "pretty viciously," Miller said previously.

The man and woman were both rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center for severe injuries to their face and body parts. The injuries were not life threatening, but the woman was still in the hospital as of Thursday, and needed surgery for a dog bite to her leg.

Secaucus Police were going to seize the dogs when at least one of the dogs was involved in a second attack Wednesday afternoon in Hoboken: At 1 p.m. Wednesday, three Cane Corsos belonging to the same owner got out of a car near the Hoboken ShopRite (900 Madison Street) and attacked two dog walkers walking eight other dogs.

A pet Bernadoodle was mauled, but survived; see photos of the dog in the hospital. Both dog walkers suffered sprained wrists trying to control the situation.

The owner got all three dogs back in his car and left before police arrived.

The owner lives in Hoboken, where he has at least six Cane Corsos. Miller said he "appeared to be a breeder."

Last August, the city of Hoboken ordered the man to keep the dogs leashed and muzzled in public.

After the two attacks, he was ordered to surrender three of the Cane Corsos to Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, and the other three are currently being held in Secaucus.

The man is ordered to appear in court Tuesday.

"Euthanization [of the dogs] is likely to happen, but not definite yet," Miller said previously.

Cane Corsos or Italian mastiffs were bred to be guard dogs, although they are reportedly good with their own families. Weighing over 100 pounds, with large muscles, they have an intimidating look.
