SECAUCUS, NJ — The man who led police on a six-hour stand-off Wednesday in Secaucus was recently released from prison, after he was convicted of simple assault in a domestic violence incident and for robbing gas stations in 2016.
Sahil Ram, 30, is also from Secaucus.
Ram and two other men robbed multiple gas stations at knifepoint in Somerset County on the night of January 30, 2016. For those crimes, he was convicted of two counts of robbery by use of force, and one count of criminal attempted robbery, according to New Jersey prison records.
Ram was sentenced to seven years in prison and his prison term started in 2018. He served six years and was released early on parole in 2024. However, he was arrested anew in February 2025 and charged with simple assault in a domestic violence case, according to state criminal records and NJ.com.
Ram was convicted and returned to prison in March 2025. He was released from prison on March 5 of this year and was out on parole.
Ram allegedly violated parole and that's why NJ State Parole officers had a warrant for his arrest Wednesday, said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller. Parole officers tried to arrest him Wednesday morning at his apartment in Plaza Gardens and Ram refused to come out of the second-floor apartment. Secaucus Police say Ram armed himself with a knife and barricaded himself in his apartment to avoid being arrested. Ram threatened Secaucus Police and parole officers, showed a knife and threw knives at police officers from a second-floor window, said police.
He was alone in the apartment the entire time, said Miller.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Hudson County SWAT team deployed gas into the apartment. That ultimately led to Ram leaving the apartment. A SWAT member was injured by an object Ram dropped just before he surrendered.
The state is refusing to say exactly how Ram is accused of violating parole this time.
"Sahil Ram was returned to custody on September 30, 2026 for a parole violation," said Nicole Swiderski, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey state Parole Board. "The State Parole Board is unable to comment on the nature of the violation as (it) is deemed confidential."
Here are details on the 2016 gas station robberies he was sent to prison for:
Ram, then 19, and with a listed address of Paterson Plank Road in Secaucus, committed a one-night gas station robbery spree on the night of January 30, 2016, along with Jaylen Folk, 19, and Evan Moore, 21, both of Hamilton Street, in Somerville.
First, the trio robbed a BP gas station on Rt. 22 in Bridgewater. Wearing masks, one man held a knife to the neck of the gas station attendant and the other demanded cash from him. Later that same night, they robbed the Shell gas station on West End Avenue in Somerville, again threatening the attendant with a 12-inch knife. They made off with $70 in the first robbery, and $640 in the second robbery.
They tried to rob a third gas station that night, the BP on Rt. 22 east in North Plainfield, but the attendant had time to call North Plainfield Police.
Folk was arrested immediately that night, and Moore and Ram were arrested in the following weeks. Ram was arrested March 21, 2016 at his apartment in Secaucus by detectives with the Somerset County Prosecutor's office, with the help of Secaucus Police. He was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of second-degree attempted robbery, both of which he was later convicted for.
