Doctor Who Once Worked At Secaucus Hospital Arrested

A doctor who once worked at the Secaucus hospital is accused of forging 100s of fake prescriptions for himself, for Xanax and other pills.

SECAUCUS, NJ — A doctor who once worked at Meadowlands Hospital — the Secaucus town hospital under its previous owners — was arrested this April, after prosecutors say he forged hundreds of drug prescriptions for himself, including for Adderall, Xanax and Oxycodone.

The physician is Sagy Grinberg, 39, who was arrested at his Weehawken home on April 1. His online doctor profile said he is affiliated with Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center.

Prosecutors say that between 2016 and February, 2021 Grinberg wrote 69 fraudulent prescriptions for himself, for about 141 different drugs.

The drugs he prescribed himself include Oxycodone, Xanax, D-Amphetamine, Adderall, Promethazine-Codeine, Cialis/Tadalafil, Dexilant and Dronabinol, said the state attorney general. Prosecutors say he forged other doctors' signatures to get the drugs.

All of those pharmaceuticals are classified as controlled dangerous substances ("CDS") and highly regulated by U.S. laws. However, they are often used and abused recreationally.

It was a Walgreens pharmacy in Vauxhall (Union County) that first noticed last March they had been given 12 prescriptions for these drugs, all for one person: Grinberg. That pharmacy called the doctor whose name was on the 12 scripts; however, the doctor said he neither wrote nor verbally authorized the prescriptions.

That was when the NJ Attorney General and state Office of the Insurance Fraud were called in to investigate Grinberg. They said they found more bogus prescriptions written for Grinberg (this time primarily for Percocet), this time listing another doctor as prescribing them.

Prosecutors say Grinberg forged both doctors' signatures repeatedly to get the drugs.

When interviewed by law enforcement, one of the doctors said he and Grinberg previously worked together at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center as residents.

Additionally, records revealed Grinberg’s insurance company paid over $6,000 for the fraudulent prescriptions.

Grinberg was charged with second-degree healthcare fraud, two counts of forgery and multiple charges of obtaining drugs by fraud. He is facing 5 to 10 years in state prison.

This case was investigated by New Jersey’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and prosecuted by the New Jersey Attorney General.
