Longtime Secaucus Business Wilenta Feed Donates $2,500 To Riverkeeper

Wilenta Feed, Inc., a family-owned business located in Secaucus, announced a $2,500 donation this holiday season to Hackensack Riverkeeper.

SECAUCUS, NJ — Wilenta Feed, Inc., a family-owned business located for years in Secaucus, announced a $2,500 donation this holiday season to Hackensack Riverkeeper.

Wilenta Feed, Inc. produces cattle and chicken feed in the industrial section of town. Their plant is located on Henry Street.

The way it works is that from Dec. 10 through Dec. 31, all donations made to Hackensack Riverkeeper will be matched, dollar for dollar, by Wilenta until the $2,500 threshold is reached. Wilenta Feed, Inc. is in the food recycling business. What they do is take all byproducts from bakeries in Hudson County and the North Jersey area, and convert those products into food for chickens. They also take vegetable scraps from restaurants and convert it into cattle feed.

Wilenta is currently owned by Michael Wilenta, who gave a tour of his plant Thursday morning. The business was started two generations ago, by his grandfather in 1979.

"He started this business back when Secaucus was all pig farms," said Wilenta. "He himself owned a pig farm."

He said his family company previously support Hackensack Riverkeeper by giving them dumpsters to use when Riverkeeper does its clean-ups of the Hackensack River every spring. Now, Wilenta is happy to contribute to them financially.

This $2,500 gift matches the 25th anniversary of when Riverkeeper was founded.

Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper’s founder and executive director, thanked the local business.

“I cannot think of a better way to conclude our twenty-fifth anniversary year than through the generosity of our good friends at Wilenta Feed,” said Sheehan. “They are the perfect example of what a good – and community-focused – corporate citizen is.”
